## Overview

AP Business with Personal Finance pairs an introduction to how businesses start, sell, and stay solvent with the money decisions a person makes about saving and borrowing. It is one of College Board's AP Career Kickstart courses, built with employers, and its first AP Exam is in May 2027. Four of the course's five units are tested, and College Board publishes a weighting range for each on the multiple-choice section.

Two year-long projects run beside the units. In the Business Canvas Project, students develop a product idea and test it against real customers, then pitch it in the first free-response question on exam day. The Financial Advisor Project covers Unit 5, on budgeting, taxes, insurance, and investing; that unit is assessed through the project rather than on the exam, so this guide does not treat it as an exam section.

Arcade Academy is an independent study workspace. Use the official Course and Exam Description and its clarifications as the authority on content and project requirements, and use the pages below to organize review of the tested units.

## Exam format

- **Section I:** 60 multiple-choice questions in 70 minutes, 60% of the score
- **Section II:** 4 free-response questions in 90 minutes, 40% of the score
- **Project pitch:** The first free-response question, 25 minutes and 15% of the score, asks students to pitch their Business Canvas Project product and explain how testing shaped it
- **Other free response:** 3 questions in 65 minutes, 25% of the score: a household finance scenario, applying business concepts to data, and choosing between two business options
- **Delivery:** Fully digital in College Board's Bluebook app
- **First exam:** Tuesday 4 May 2027
- **Score scale:** 1 to 5

## Scoring

The multiple-choice section contributes 60% and the four free-response questions 40% of a composite score, which College Board converts to the reported 1 to 5 scale. The project pitch is scored as one of the free-response questions, so preparing the Business Canvas Project during the year is part of exam preparation. Colleges set their own credit and placement policies.

## Units

AP Business with Personal Finance is organized into 4 units. Each one below lists its published weighting where the governing body publishes one, the topics it covers, and study tips specific to it.

### 1. Unit 1: Businesses, Competition, and New Ideas

- Position: 1 of 4
- Published weighting: 20–30%
- Page: https://www.arcadesacademy.com/exams/ap-business-with-personal-finance/unit-1-businesses-competition-and-new-ideas

Unit 1 introduces what a business is and how it competes: the forms a business can take, how markets and competitors shape its choices, and where new venture ideas come from. It also covers reading the outside environment a business works in, and the ethical and supply-chain questions that come with running one. The Business Canvas Project starts from this unit's idea-finding work.

#### Topics

- **Business types and structures** — What separates a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, and nonprofit, and how the choice affects owners.
- **Markets and competitive advantage** — How competitors, substitutes, and customer needs decide whether a business can stand out.
- **Finding venture ideas** — Turning a problem customers have into a product idea worth testing.
- **Scanning the outside environment** — Political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal factors, the PESTEL lens, applied to a business decision.
- **Ethics, roles, and supply chains** — Who does what inside a business, how goods reach customers, and the ethical trade-offs along the way.

#### Study tips

- For each business form, learn one advantage and one risk for the owner; questions often turn on liability.
- Practice a PESTEL scan on a real local business so the six factors come quickly under time pressure.
- Start a list of customer problems early in the year; it feeds both this unit and your Business Canvas Project.

### 2. Unit 2: Marketing

- Position: 2 of 4
- Published weighting: 20–30%
- Page: https://www.arcadesacademy.com/exams/ap-business-with-personal-finance/unit-2-marketing

Unit 2 covers how a business finds and reaches its customers: choosing a target market, understanding why buyers decide as they do, and gathering data to test assumptions. It then works through the marketing mix of product, price, place, and promotion. Market research here is the same hypothesis testing the Business Canvas Project asks students to explain on exam day.

#### Topics

- **Target markets and segmentation** — Dividing customers by need or behavior and choosing which group a product serves first.
- **Buyer behavior** — The steps and influences behind a purchase decision, from noticing a need to buying again.
- **Market research and data** — Surveys, interviews, and sales data, and how to tell whether evidence supports a product hypothesis.
- **The marketing mix** — Product, pricing, distribution channels, and promotion, and how a change in one affects the others.

#### Study tips

- Write each product idea as a testable hypothesis about a customer, then name the evidence that would prove it wrong.
- Practice explaining how a price change ripples through the rest of the marketing mix.
- Use your own project's survey results as worked examples; the pitch question asks how testing changed your decisions.

### 3. Unit 3: Saving, Borrowing, and Business Finance

- Position: 3 of 4
- Published weighting: 25–35%
- Page: https://www.arcadesacademy.com/exams/ap-business-with-personal-finance/unit-3-saving-borrowing-and-business-finance

College Board splits Unit 3 into two parts and publishes one weighting for both. Personal Saving and Borrowing covers saving toward a goal, what makes saving hard, the true cost of credit, and what debt does over time. Business Finance and Accounting covers business costs, ways to raise money, and the three main financial statements. The household free-response question draws on the first part.

#### Topics

- **Saving toward a goal** — Planning for a purchase, using checking and savings accounts, and the habits and obstacles that affect saving.
- **Credit and the cost of borrowing** — Interest rates, credit scores, and how the total cost of a loan or card balance grows over time.
- **Business costs and financing** — Fixed and variable costs, and raising money through owners' funds, loans, or investors.
- **Financial statements** — What the income statement, balance sheet, and cash-flow statement each show, and how they connect.

#### Study tips

- Work interest calculations by hand until you can compare two borrowing options quickly.
- Learn what question each financial statement answers: profit over a period, position on a date, or cash in and out.
- Practice household scenarios end to end, since one free-response question is built around a family's money decisions.

### 4. Unit 4: Management and Strategy

- Position: 4 of 4
- Published weighting: 15–20%
- Page: https://www.arcadesacademy.com/exams/ap-business-with-personal-finance/unit-4-management-and-strategy

Unit 4 covers how a business is led and how it plans: what managers and leaders do, how performance is measured with key indicators, and how strategic choices are made with frameworks such as SWOT and Porter's Five Forces. It also covers how work is organized and paid. The business-decision free-response question, which asks students to choose between two options using criteria, practices this unit's skills.

#### Topics

- **Leadership and management roles** — Planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, and how leadership styles fit different teams.
- **Measuring performance** — Choosing key performance indicators and using them to judge whether a business is on track.
- **Strategy frameworks** — SWOT analysis and the Five Forces, and using them to weigh a strategic choice.
- **Work arrangements and pay** — Employment types, compensation, and incentives, and how they affect motivation and cost.

#### Study tips

- Practice the decision question's shape: state criteria, judge both options against each, and recommend one with a reason.
- Keep one worked SWOT and one worked Five Forces analysis for a business you know.
- Pair each key performance indicator you learn with the decision it would inform.

## Study strategies

- Weight review by the published multiple-choice ranges, giving Unit 3's combined saving, borrowing, and finance content the largest share.
- Treat the Business Canvas Project as exam preparation: keep notes on each hypothesis you tested and what the evidence changed.
- Rehearse a timed pitch of your product, since the first free-response question gives 25 minutes for it.
- Practice the three other free-response shapes separately: a household finance scenario, applying a concept to business data, and a two-option decision.
- Do the borrowing and interest arithmetic by hand until it is quick and reliable.
- Check College Board's clarifications to the course description before the exam, since this is the course's first year.
