AP Spanish Literature and Culture, AP exams, 50%

Section II: Free Response

Section II is four questions in about one hundred minutes, all written in Spanish. Two short answers ask for concise explanation, one of them comparing a text with a work of visual art. Two essays follow: an analysis of a single text and a comparison of two texts, at least one of which comes from the required reading list. Together they carry 50% of the exam score.

Study tips

How to practice Free response.

Section-specific guidance that follows from how this material is usually tested.

  • Build a thematic grid pairing works that share a theme; the comparison essay is far faster with pairs prepared.
  • Practice short answers with a strict word ceiling; padding is the most common way students lose time.
  • Memorize a few short quotations per work so evidence is available without the text in front of you.
  • Write at least two full timed Section II sets before the exam to calibrate pacing across four questions.

Where this fits

Section II: Free Response is 2 of 2 exam sections in the AP Spanish Literature and Culture guide, and it carries a published weighting of 50% in the official framework. Use the full guide to balance it against everything else you have to review.

Original practice questions written to the published framework for this section. No expert has reviewed them, and they are not taken from any official exam. Try each one before you open the answer.

  1. Question 1Foundational

How many free-response questions are on the AP Spanish Literature and Culture exam?

    1. AFour
    2. BTwo
    3. CThree
    4. DSix
    Show answer

    Answer: A. Four

Section II contains four questions in about one hundred minutes: two short answers and two essays. Answering two counts only the essays and ignores the short answers, one of which asks for a comparison between a text and a work of art.

Key insight: Four questions in about one hundred minutes means pacing is a scored skill; practice full sets, not single prompts.

  2. Question 2Foundational

In which language must students write their answers to the AP Spanish Literature and Culture free-response questions?

    1. ASpanish
    2. BEnglish
    3. CEither Spanish or English
    4. DSpanish for essays and English for short answers
    Show answer

    Answer: A. Spanish

Prompts, passages, and responses are all in Spanish, and rubrics expect literary analysis written in Spanish. Because of that, keeping your reading notes in Spanish saves you from translating your own thinking under time pressure on exam day.

Key insight: Take notes in Spanish all year so exam-day writing is recall rather than translation.

  3. Question 3Intermediate

One of the two short-answer questions in Section II asks students to connect a literary passage with what other kind of source?

    1. AA work of art
    2. BA newspaper article
    3. CA film clip
    4. DAn audio recording
    Show answer

Answer: A. A work of art

One short answer pairs a text with a work of visual art and asks how a shared theme, technique, or context links them. An audio recording is the tempting alternative because Section I includes interpretive listening, but that listening lives in the multiple-choice section rather than in the free-response short answers.

Key insight: Practice with paintings and photographs beside your texts so the text-and-art comparison is rehearsed rather than improvised.

  4. Question 4Intermediate

In the Section II essay that compares two texts, what requirement applies to the works a student discusses?

    1. AAt least one must come from the required reading list
    2. BBoth must come from the required reading list
    3. CNeither may come from the required reading list
    4. DBoth must be poems
    Show answer

Answer: A. At least one must come from the required reading list

The comparison essay connects two texts around a theme or technique, and at least one of them comes from the required reading list. Requiring both to be on the list is the common misreading, and it makes students discard valid comparisons with an unfamiliar passage supplied on the exam.

Key insight: Build a thematic grid pairing required works in advance; the comparison essay is far faster with pairs already prepared.

  5. Question 5Advanced

¿Qué monja mexicana del siglo XVII escribió la Respuesta a Sor Filotea de la Cruz y las redondillas que comienzan Hombres necios que acusáis?

    1. ASor Juana Inés de la Cruz
    2. BSanta Teresa de Ávila
    3. CRosalía de Castro
    4. DAlfonsina Storni
    Show answer
