AP exams, 5 units

AP Statistics exam guide

The revised five-unit AP Statistics framework, from exploring data and collecting it through inference and regression.

Follows the fall 2026 course and exam description, from 11 May 2027

Overview

What AP Statistics covers.

AP Statistics is a college-level introductory statistics course organized around the statistical investigation process: formulating questions, collecting data, analyzing data, and interpreting results. Those four statistical practices are assessed directly, and much of the exam asks for a written interpretation rather than a computed value.

The course was substantially revised effective fall 2026, and the first exam on the new framework is the May 2027 administration. The nine previous units were consolidated into five broader units, several topics were removed, and the exam moves from hybrid to fully digital with a different question mix: more multiple-choice questions and fewer but larger free-response questions. Because the revision is recent, unit weightings and exam details should be confirmed against the current Course and Exam Description.

Arcade Academy is an independent study workspace. Use the official Course and Exam Description as the authoritative content list, and use the unit pages below to organize practice, particularly the written-interpretation work that this exam rewards more than any other AP mathematics exam.

Scoring

The multiple-choice and free-response sections each contribute half of a composite score, which College Board converts to the reported 1 to 5 scale using cut points set for that year's exam. Free-response questions are scored holistically on a rubric that rewards correct interpretation in context, and colleges set their own credit and placement policies.

Study strategies

How to work through this exam.

These strategies follow from the exam's own structure. Adapt them to the time you actually have each week.

  • Practice writing full interpretations rather than computing values, because this exam awards most of its free-response points for reasoning stated in context.
  • Adopt a single inference template and use it identically for every procedure so that stating hypotheses, checking conditions, computing, and concluding become automatic.
  • Learn to read calculator and software output rather than only computing by hand, since the exam frequently supplies output and asks for interpretation.
  • Drill the distinction between random sampling and random assignment, which determines whether a conclusion can generalize, claim causation, both, or neither.
  • Work released free-response questions alongside their scoring guidelines to see how points are actually awarded before writing many practice answers.
  • Confirm the current framework and exam details on the official pages, since the course was revised effective fall 2026 and the May 2027 administration is the first exam on the new framework.

Common questions

AP Statistics questions students ask.

How is the AP Statistics Exam structured?

The exam runs 3 hours. Section I is 42 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes for 50% of the score, and Section II is 4 free-response questions in 1 hour 30 minutes for the other 50%, each worth 10 points. Confirm current details on the official exam page, since the exam changed with the revised framework.

What changed in the revised AP Statistics course?

Effective fall 2026, the previous nine units were consolidated into five, several topics were removed, the four statistical practices were restated, and the exam moved to fully digital delivery with more multiple-choice questions and fewer but larger free-response questions. The official Course and Exam Description is the authoritative description of the changes.

Which parts of the course do students find hardest?

College Board does not rank difficulty. Students most often report that writing conclusions precisely enough to earn full rubric credit is harder than the calculations, and that choosing the right inference procedure takes the most practice. Your own scored practice is the best guide.

How is the exam scored?

Both sections contribute equally to a composite score converted to the reported 1 to 5 scale using cut points set each year. Free-response questions are scored on rubrics that reward contextual interpretation, and colleges decide independently what score earns credit or placement.

What calculator can I use, and is the exam digital?

An approved handheld graphing calculator is permitted in addition to the graphing calculator built into Bluebook, and a reference booklet with formulas and tables is provided. Beginning with the May 2027 exam, AP Statistics is fully digital, with both sections completed in Bluebook. Confirm current policy on the official exam page.
