AP Chinese Language and Culture exam guide
A computer-delivered exam: type Chinese, record spoken responses, and present research from the course project.
Follows the fall 2026 course and exam description, from 13 May 2027
Overview
What AP Chinese Language and Culture covers.
AP Chinese Language and Culture develops interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication in Mandarin through authentic materials from Chinese-speaking communities. The revised course organizes content into six thematic units: families and communities, language and culture, art and creativity, science and technology, contemporary life, and global contexts.
AP Chinese has long been a computer-delivered exam, and with College Board's revision of the AP world language and culture courses for 2026-27 it is administered in the Bluebook app beginning with the May 2027 administration. You read on screen, listen through a headset, type responses using an input method, and record spoken answers with a microphone. Chinese text can be displayed in simplified or traditional characters, and typing input methods have historically included Pinyin and Bopomofo options.
The revised free-response section carries 50% of the score and keeps two written tasks that the European-language exams do not have. Published weights are 20% for the spoken Project Presentation, 15% for the spoken Project Q&A, and 7.5% each for the story narration and email response writing tasks; multiple-choice listening and reading carry 25% each. Confirm the current task list, timings, and input-method options with College Board before exam day.

Study strategies
How to work through this exam.
These strategies follow from the exam's own structure. Adapt them to the time you actually have each week.
- Type in Chinese every week; exam writing is typed, so handwriting practice alone leaves a gap.
- Record spoken practice and review it for pace, completeness, and tone accuracy.
- Prepare project research early and keep the Personalized Project Reference organized for speaking.
- Study vocabulary in the six thematic units so listening and reading sets feel familiar.
- Practice with full timed sections to build the concentration the listening portions demand.
- Confirm current task names, weights, and input options with College Board, since the framework changed for 2026-27.
Common questions
AP Chinese Language and Culture questions students ask.
Is the AP Chinese exam taken on a computer?
Yes. AP Chinese is computer delivered — you read on screen, listen through a headset, type responses, and record spoken answers. With the 2026-27 revision, the exam is administered in the Bluebook app beginning in May 2027.
Can I use traditional characters?
Chinese text on the exam can be displayed in simplified or traditional characters, and typing input methods have historically included Pinyin and Bopomofo options. Confirm the current options with College Board before exam day.
How are the free-response tasks weighted?
The Project Presentation is weighted 20%, the Project Q&A 15%, and the two writing tasks 7.5% each, giving free response 50% of the exam. Listening and reading multiple choice make up the remaining 50%.
What is the course project?
Students research a topic released in advance and prepare a Personalized Project Reference outline submitted through the AP Digital Portfolio, then present on the topic and answer recorded follow-up questions on exam day.
Is AP Chinese suitable for heritage speakers?
Many heritage speakers take it. Speaking and listening are often already strong; the usual work is in reading unfamiliar registers and typing accurately under time.
