AP Chinese Language and Culture, AP exams, 50%
Free Response: Speaking and Writing
The free-response section is worth 50% of the score and mixes recorded speaking with typed writing. Two spoken tasks come from the course project: a Project Presentation of about three minutes and a Project Q&A answering four recorded questions. Two writing tasks follow: a story narration based on a sequence of images and an email response, each weighted 7.5%.

Study tips
How to practice Free response.
Section-specific guidance that follows from how this material is usually tested.
- Practice typing timed responses with the input method you will use on exam day, not by handwriting.
- Rehearse the presentation aloud with a timer and record it so pacing problems surface early.
- Drill email conventions — salutation, body, closing — until they cost you no thinking time.
- Narrate picture sequences weekly; story tasks reward connective structure more than rare vocabulary.

- Question 1Foundational
How are the written free-response answers produced on the AP Chinese Language and Culture exam?
- ATyped with a computer input method
- BHandwritten with a brush
- CHandwritten in a paper booklet
- DDictated aloud and transcribed by a reader
Show answer
Answer: A. Typed with a computer input method
AP Chinese is computer delivered, so students type their responses using an input method rather than writing characters by hand. Handwriting practice alone therefore leaves a real gap, because selecting the intended character among homophones is a timed skill of its own.
Key insight: Practice timed typing with the same input method you will use on exam day, not with pen and paper.
- Question 2Foundational
What share of the AP Chinese Language and Culture exam score comes from the free-response section as a whole?
- A50 percent
- B25 percent
- C35 percent
- D65 percent
Show answer
Answer: A. 50 percent
Free response carries 50 percent, combining the Project Presentation at 20 percent, the Project Q and A at 15 percent, and two writing tasks at 7.5 percent each. The other 50 percent comes from multiple-choice listening and reading, weighted 25 percent each.
Key insight: Speaking is 35 percent of this exam and typed writing only 15, so recorded practice deserves the larger share of your time.
- Question 3Intermediate
The story narration writing task on the AP Chinese exam asks students to build a narrative from a sequence of how many images?
- AFour images
- BTwo images
- CThree images
- DSix images
Show answer
Answer: A. Four images
The story narration task presents a sequence of four images and asks for a typed narrative that connects them coherently. Because the pictures already supply the plot, scorers reward connective structure and clear time expressions more than rare vocabulary.
Key insight: Narrate picture sequences weekly and drill connectors for sequence, cause, and result; those carry the task.
- Question 4Intermediate
What weight does each of the two typed writing tasks carry on the revised AP Chinese Language and Culture exam?
- A7.5 percent
- B15 percent
- C10 percent
- D20 percent
Show answer
Answer: A. 7.5 percent
Each writing task, the story narration and the email response, is weighted 7.5 percent, so together they account for 15 percent of the exam. Answering 15 percent describes the pair rather than a single task, or confuses them with the Project Q and A.
Key insight: Two small tasks at 7.5 percent each still add up to more than a letter grade of the free-response score.
- Question 5Advanced
Which Chinese measure word is used when counting books, as in one book?
- A本 (ben)
- B张 (zhang)
- C条 (tiao)
- D只 (zhi)
Show answer
Answer: A. 本 (ben)
Books take the measure word 本, giving 一本书 for one book. 张 is the strongest distractor because it is also extremely common, but it counts flat sheet-like things such as paper, tables, and tickets rather than bound volumes.
Key insight: Learn each noun with its measure word from the start; correcting the pairing later costs more time than learning it once.
