AP Computer Science A exam guide

Java programming across the four units of the revised AP Computer Science A framework, with published exam weightings.

Follows the fall 2025 course and exam description, from 15 May 2026

Overview

What AP Computer Science A covers.

AP Computer Science A is a Java programming course equivalent to a first-semester college computer science course. It covers object-oriented programming, control flow, class design, and data structures, and it assesses both reading code and writing it, with four free-response questions that require producing working Java by hand.

The course framework was revised effective fall 2025. The previous ten units were consolidated into four, the inheritance unit was removed to bring the course closer to typical introductory college courses, and topics on text files and data sets were added. The exam is now fully digital, with free-response answers typed into a code editor inside College Board's Bluebook app rather than handwritten.

Arcade Academy is an independent study workspace. Because the framework was revised recently, treat the official Course and Exam Description as authoritative for unit organization and published weightings, and use the unit pages below to organize coding practice.

Scoring

The multiple-choice section contributes 55% and the free-response section 45% of a composite score, which College Board converts to the reported 1 to 5 scale using cut points set for that year's exam. Free-response answers are scored on rubrics that award partial credit for correct components, so a partially working method still earns points. Colleges set their own credit and placement policies.

Study strategies

How to work through this exam.

These strategies follow from the exam's own structure. Adapt them to the time you actually have each week.

  • Write code by hand or in a plain editor without autocomplete, since the exam's code editor will not fix syntax for you.
  • Weight practice by the published percentages, giving data collections and selection and iteration the largest shares.
  • Trace code methodically with a variable table, because a large fraction of the multiple-choice section is reading code rather than writing it.
  • Work full free-response questions under time and then score them against released rubrics, since partial credit follows specific components.
  • Practice writing complete classes from written specifications, which is the free-response format students most often underprepare.
  • Confirm the current unit organization and exam details on the official pages, since the framework was revised effective fall 2025.

Common questions

AP Computer Science A questions students ask.

How is the AP Computer Science A Exam structured?

The exam runs 3 hours. Section I is 42 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes for 55% of the score, and Section II is 4 free-response questions in 1 hour 30 minutes for the remaining 45%. The Java Quick Reference is available during the exam.

What changed in the revised AP Computer Science A framework?

Effective fall 2025, the previous ten units were consolidated into four, the inheritance unit was removed to align the course more closely with typical introductory college courses, and topics on text files and data sets were added. The official Course and Exam Description is the authoritative description of the change.

Which units do students find hardest?

College Board does not rank difficulty. Students commonly report that two-dimensional array traversals and ArrayList modification during traversal require the most practice, and that writing a full class from a specification is the free-response format that needs the most rehearsal. Practice results are the better guide.

How is the exam scored?

The multiple-choice section contributes 55% and the free-response section 45% of a composite score converted to the reported 1 to 5 scale using cut points set each year. Free-response rubrics award partial credit for correct components, so incomplete but correct work still earns points. Colleges decide credit and placement individually.

How is the exam delivered, and can I use an IDE?

AP Computer Science A is fully digital and taken in College Board's Bluebook app, with free-response answers typed into a built-in code editor. It is a code editor rather than a full development environment, so it does not compile or run your code. Confirm current details on the official exam page.
