AP exams, 6 units
AP Microeconomics exam guide
Six units of firm and market analysis, from elasticity through market failure, with the cost curves and market-structure graphs the exam demands.
Follows the fall 2026 course and exam description, from 4 May 2027
Overview
What AP Microeconomics covers.
AP Microeconomics studies the decisions of individual consumers, firms, and markets: how prices are set, how firms choose output, how market structure changes outcomes, and when markets fail to allocate resources efficiently. The course is model-heavy and cumulative, since the cost curves built in Unit 3 reappear in every market structure that follows.
The exam rewards graphical fluency above all. Free-response questions typically ask for a correctly labeled graph, an identification of a profit-maximizing quantity or an efficiency loss, and a written explanation of why the result follows. Perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, oligopoly, and factor markets each have a standard diagram students should be able to draw from memory.

At a glance
- Section I
- 60 multiple-choice questions in 70 minutes (two-thirds of the exam score)
- Section II
- 3 free-response questions in 60 minutes, beginning with a 10-minute reading period (one-third of the exam score)
- Free-response design
- One long question and two short questions, typically requiring correctly labeled graphs and explanations
- Delivery
- Recent administrations have used a hybrid format, with multiple-choice questions in College Board's Bluebook application and free-response graphs and work on paper; confirm the format for your exam year on the official course page
- Score scale
- 1 to 5; credit and placement policies are set by each college
- Governing body
- College Board
- Who takes it
- High school students taking AP Microeconomics who want college credit or placement and a foundation for business, economics, or policy study.
Scoring
The multiple-choice section contributes two-thirds of the exam score and the free-response section one-third. Free responses are scored with published point-based rubrics that award credit for correct graphs, correct identifications, and correct explanations, and the composite is converted to the 1 to 5 AP scale.

Study strategies
How to work through this exam.
These strategies follow from the exam's own structure. Adapt them to the time you actually have each week.
- Rebuild the cost-curve family and each market-structure graph from a blank page several times a week; nearly every free-response question begins with one.
- Answer free-response prompts in rubric order, drawing the graph first, then identifying the quantity or area, then explaining.
- Use the 10-minute reading period to sketch graphs and underline the task verbs before writing anything.
- Practice elasticity and surplus calculations under time, since arithmetic slowness costs multiple-choice points.
- Compare all four market structures on one page and review that page weekly rather than studying each structure in isolation.
- If you also take AP Macroeconomics, keep separate vocabulary notes, because shared terms carry different meanings across the two courses.
Common questions
AP Microeconomics questions students ask.
How is the AP Microeconomics exam structured?
Section I is 60 multiple-choice questions in 70 minutes, worth two-thirds of the score. Section II is 3 free-response questions in 60 minutes, beginning with a 10-minute reading period and worth one-third of the score.
How much of the exam is graphs?
Most free-response questions require at least one correctly labeled graph, and many multiple-choice questions present or imply one. Graphing accuracy is the highest-leverage skill in the course.
Should I take Micro before Macro?
Either order works, and the courses share Unit 1. Some students find Micro's firm-level logic a natural foundation, while others prefer Macro's policy focus first; schools often teach them in a single year.
Do I need calculus?
No. AP Microeconomics uses arithmetic, ratios, and graph interpretation. Marginal analysis is presented through tables and graphs rather than derivatives.
Is the exam given on a computer?
Recent administrations have used a hybrid format, with multiple-choice questions in College Board's Bluebook application and free-response work, including graphs, completed on paper. Confirm the format for your exam year on the official course page.
