AP exams, 5 units
AP Psychology exam guide
The revised five-unit framework, from biological bases to mental and physical health, with research methods running through all of it.
Follows the fall 2025 course and exam description, from 12 May 2026
Overview
What AP Psychology covers.
AP Psychology is an introductory survey of behavior and mental processes, covering biological foundations, cognition, development and learning, social psychology and personality, and mental and physical health. College Board revised the course framework effective with the 2024-25 school year, consolidating the content into five units and rewriting the free-response section.
Research methods are not confined to a single unit in the revised framework. Experimental design, operational definitions, sampling, ethics, and the interpretation of descriptive and inferential statistics run through the whole course as science practices, and they appear on both sections of the exam. The revised free-response section reflects that emphasis: students respond to an Article Analysis Question based on a research summary and an Evidence-Based Question that requires an argument supported by provided sources.
Arcade Academy is an independent study workspace. Because the framework changed recently, confirm the current unit structure, exam format, and timing on the official AP Psychology course page, and use these unit pages to organize terminology review, research-design practice, and timed writing.

- Question counts and timing
- The revised exam changed both counts and timing; confirm the current figures on the official course page before planning practice sessions
- Framework
- Five units, revised effective with the 2024-25 school year
- Delivery
- Recent administrations have been delivered digitally through College Board's Bluebook application; confirm the format for your exam year on the official course page
- Score scale
- 1 to 5; credit and placement policies are set by each college
- Governing body
- College Board
- Who takes it
- High school students taking AP Psychology who want college credit or placement and a foundation for later study in psychology, neuroscience, or health fields.
Scoring
The multiple-choice section contributes roughly two-thirds of the exam score and the two free-response questions the remaining third. Free responses are scored with published point-based rubrics that award credit for correctly applying concepts to the provided research or scenario, and the composite is converted to the 1 to 5 AP scale.

Study strategies
How to work through this exam.
These strategies follow from the exam's own structure. Adapt them to the time you actually have each week.
- Confirm the current exam format on the official course page before building a practice schedule, since the framework and free-response section were revised for 2024-25.
- Practice the Article Analysis Question format by reading short research summaries and identifying design, variables, and limitations.
- Rehearse research methods continuously rather than as a single unit, because design and data questions appear across the whole exam.
- Generate your own examples for each concept; the free-response rubrics award application, not definition.
- Use spaced repetition for the course's large terminology load, and review earlier units weekly so they do not decay.
- Practice interpreting graphs, tables, and effect descriptions, which appear in both the multiple-choice and free-response sections.
Common questions
AP Psychology questions students ask.
Did AP Psychology change recently?
Yes. College Board revised the course framework effective with the 2024-25 school year, organizing content into five units and replacing the previous free-response questions with an Article Analysis Question and an Evidence-Based Question.
What are the five units?
Biological Bases of Behavior, Cognition, Development and Learning, Social Psychology and Personality, and Mental and Physical Health.
How many questions are on the exam?
The revised exam changed both question counts and timing, so confirm the current figures on the official AP Psychology course page. Structurally, the exam is a multiple-choice section worth roughly two-thirds of the score and two free-response questions worth the remaining third.
Is there a separate research methods unit?
Not in the revised framework. Research design, data interpretation, and ethics are treated as science practices that run through all five units and are assessed on both sections of the exam.
Does this course qualify anyone to diagnose or treat?
No. AP Psychology is an introductory academic survey. It does not prepare anyone to diagnose, treat, or advise on mental health, and nothing on this site is clinical guidance.
